EZRA'S P.O.V
It had been a week since Tegan left. I hadn't reached out; I knew she needed time. But I wasn't going to give up. Not that easily. I would chase her back no matter how long it took. I knew in my heart she was the one for me. I just didn't know the reason behind it was a fated mate bond. I couldn't tell the Elders this, they would have her killed for her mere presence of existing. Maybe the curse wasn't as strong as they thought? I felt this strong connection to her, my wolf felt overprotective and needy, then there were the sparks. How had I not put all the pieces together for what all the signs meant? Maybe it was best I hadn't recognized it, then the outcome could have been a lot worse for us both. But that didn't stop the ache in my chest I felt with her being gone.
I swirled the golden liquid in my cup before taking a sip and letting out a sigh. I hadn't slept much since she left. I couldn't stop thinking about what I did wrong. I could have fought harder, helped her get her wolf out. The signs of a wolf were all there, she just needed the extra push, but I gave her the push, just not the good kind. I allowed them to dictate my future and push away my one chance of happiness, and for what? To be a miserable king the rest of my life? There was no way I would ever replace her. It wouldn't happen.
'Mate did not reject us.' King stated.
'No, we just rejected her.'
'But mate did not accept, she ran away.' He stated, making me think for a moment.
'So, that means we have a chance.'
'A chance to chase mate back. We have to make it the best chase one has ever done.' King stated. A fact that I couldn't agree more with.
A knock at the door took me out of my thoughts.
"Enter." I hollered out.
"It's cold outside, what are you doing?" My mother's voice echoed across the room as I leaned over the railing on the balcony looking out across at the empty room.
"Drinking, what do you think I am doing?"
"Are you drunk, Ezra?"
"No. Perfectly sober."
"Your breath smells of nothing but liquor. When did you last eat?"
"Doesn't matter."
"Yes, it does! You need to stop moping around. You are the king, start acting like it."
"I am no King without a Queen, remember?"
"They have found a new suitor."
"I don't want a new suitor. I want her!" I screamed out, my voice echoing across the open land.
"The contract has been voided, it no longer -"
"Fuck the contract." I said, interrupting her.
"You know that it is set in place for a reason, Ezra."
"And I don't plan on signing another either. They cannot make me."
"They can strip you of your title."
"I'll kill them all before that ever happens. Then what can they do?"
"You cannot kill them!" She whisper-yelled.
"I can and I will if they try and stop me from bringing my mate home."
"You're not thinking clearly, you're drunk."
"I have never thought more clearly than I am right now. I should never have let her go. I fucked up."
"Get some rest, we have council meetings tomorrow."
"Yay for me, discuss who they want to wed me to now, just fucking thrilling."
"Give them a chance." my mother said with pleading eyes. But she doesn't know what she is asking me to give up.
"You're right, I'm drunk. Can you leave so I can get some rest?" I asked, not wanting to discuss the topic any longer.
"I love you son." My mom said as she kissed my cheek before leaving me alone in my thoughts again.
Once the door was closed, I looked back across the way towards her old room again. Nothing but blackness stared back at me, no sign of her anywhere. I knew she was gone, but I couldn't help but wait for her to walk out on that patio like many times before just to catch me staring. But this time she wasn't there. I pulled my phone out to look at the pictures I had taken of her beautiful sleeping figure. Everything about her was so perfect. Why did I go and fuck up a good thing?
My finger hovered over her name, aching to push the button to hear her voice again.
I resisted; however, it was late. Instead, I scrolled up to see Tanner's name. The guard I sent to be with her at all times. I clicked his name to get an update for the day. The phone rang once before he picked up the other end.
'Alpha, is everything okay? It's midnight.'
'Yeah sorry, had a busy day. Just wanted to check in. Anything new?'
'She hadn't come out of her room much, but today she requested I take her to a local doctor. She didn't want to go to a human hospital. So, I took her to this local witch wolf doctor that does medical care for all non-pack members of many species.'
'Why not take her to our pack doctor?'
'She asked to be taken to this doctor in particular. I am not sure where she learned about her. But she insisted on not returning to the kingdom. When I tried to get her to go there instead of some wolf witch doctor, she stated if I did not take her where she wanted, she would find her own ride, so I took her there instead.'
'Do you know what she needed to go for?'
'Only that the medicine she was given at the Kingdom had run out and she needed more and to get an update. She did not tell me what the medicine was for or what update she needed, however.'
'Thank you, Tanner, keep me updated. Get some sleep.' I said before disconnecting the call.
I thought back to a week ago at the hospital when Erin mentioned finding more results aside from her absent wolf. I left before hearing the results. I wonder what she diagnosed Tegan with and why she needs medicine. I laid my glass down before leaving my room, it may be midnight, but I was going to find out. I got to the infirmary in no time.
"Alpha, it's late, is everything okay?" Erin asked as I walked in.
"What were the results you found with Tegan?" I asked, ignoring her question.
"She hadn't told you?"
"If she had, I wouldn't be here."
"I don't feel comfortable releasing her results without her consent now."
"Erin, if you don't answer me, I will find out anyway and then fire you."
"It's against HIPPA, Alpha."
"FUCK HIPPA, WE ARE NOT HUMAN. WHAT WERE THE RESULTS!" I demanded with my Alpha tone.
"Sh... She is pregnant Alpha." She stuttered out her words.
Making my entire world crash before me.
Tegan is now alone and pregnant with my heir. What have I done!?
